Teen accused of shooting at Conway police officer denied bond again

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A Conway teenager accused of firing multiple shots at a Conway police officer will stay in jail.

Tywrell Alston filed a motion to reconsider bond in April. His team also filed a motion to dismiss the case back in March. Both motions were addressed during a hearing Thursday afternoon.

His defense team argued that he isn’t getting the medical attention that he needs after he was shot by the police officer. His attorney suggested home detention and electronic monitoring if Alston gets out on bond.

Meanwhile, the prosecution brought up that this isn’t Alston’s first run-in with the law where he was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. The prosecution added that they received a letter from the Conway police officer involved in the shooting who requested that Alston’s bond be denied.

“I think we’ll all agree I’m pretty liberal when it comes to giving out bonds, but anyone who has the audacity to shoot at a cop doesn’t get bond from me so I’ll deny it,” Circuit Court Judge Bentley Price said.

Alston faces a number of charges including attempted murder, discharging firearms into a dwelling and pointing and presenting firearms at a person.

Authorities said a police officer tried to perform a traffic stop on Alston in December, but instead, Alston led officers on a chase through Conway which ended at Alston’s mother’s home.

Body camera footage shows that Alston fired several shots at Conway police officer Nicholas Contino once the chase ended. Contino is then seen on video firing back.

Alston was hit during the shooting and had to go through surgery. The officer was not hurt.

Fifteenth Circuit Solicitor Jimmy Richardson has stated that the use of force by Contino was justified, and the officer will not be charged in the case.
